What Matters to Greg Beauchamp

Debbie Millman’s ongoing project “What Matters,” an effort to understand the interior life of artists, designers, and creative thinkers, is now in its third year. Each respondent is invited to answer ten identical questions and submit a nonprofessional photograph.

Greg Beauchamp is an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and the founder/CEO of creative agency and production studio, Bindery. He leads a team that crafts compelling campaigns and content for brands, as well as develops original films – all in pursuit of bold ideas, honest expression, and storytelling rooted in craft.

What is the thing you like doing most in the world?

What lights me up most is a great story – in any form. A play, stand-up, a film, or even someone just telling a story about making one. It could be a long-winded text in my high school friend group chat, or my kids recounting something epic at the dinner table. It’s that moment when someone starts talking and everyone else leans in – when the story becomes shared. That’s the best.

What is the first memory you have of being creative?

Making my elementary school classmates laugh. That feeling was electric. It led to a lifelong love of seeing an idea land, connect, and entertain. That feeling inspired me to pursue acting when I was younger, and eventually filmmaking and advertising as a career.

What is your biggest regret?

Early in my career, I spent too much time trying to prove I could do it all myself. I was a bit of a control freak. But when I started letting go, and letting others take the lead, I was often surprised (and humbled) by how much better it turned out. Collaboration has brought me more joy than control ever did. I wish I had trusted that sooner.

How have you gotten over heartbreak?

Country music.

What makes you cry?

Anytime my kids do something even remotely impressive. All four of them were just in a musical together at our community theater. Disney’s The Aristocats KIDS! – a real tear-jerker.

How long does the pride and joy of accomplishing something last for you?

We used to blast Jay-Z’s “On to the Next One” in the studio every time we shipped a project. It was part of our DNA. Don’t pause, just move forward. But during a team offsite, it surfaced that we were skipping something important: taking time to acknowledge the hard work and celebrate the wins. That was a real blind spot for me. Now, we’re much more intentional about filling the tank with that joy before jumping to the next thing.

Do you believe in an afterlife, and if so, what does that look like to you?

I am afterlife-curious, but I generally feel like life is the main event.

What do you hate most about yourself?

My two-handed backhand.

What do you love most about yourself?

If the company you keep is a reflection of who you are, then I feel proud of that. I have an incredible wife and co-conspirator, four hilarious and healthy kids, and a circle of friends and collaborators I genuinely love and admire. If I played a part in attracting that kind of energy into my life, I must be doing something right.

What is your absolute favorite meal?

I’m answering these questions while on vacation with friends and family in Greece, so it might be recency bias, but right now, nothing beats a long, lazy lunch at a seaside taverna. Salted tomatoes still warm from the sun. Crusty bread torn by hand and dredged in peppery olive oil from my father-in-law’s farm. Grilled fagri and fried barbouni passed around family-style as someone declares “best fish I’ve ever had” for the third day in a row. A little house white, a little more ouzo. The kids are running barefoot between bites, diving into the sea, emerging only for watermelon and more bread. And of course some great stories…
