Indian architect Martand Khosla has designed a series of geometric volumes for the Lawh Wa Qalam: M F Husain Museum in Doha, which is the world’s first museum dedicated to modernist artist Maqbool Fida Husain.

Launched by non-profit organisation Qatar Foundation, the museum contains over 150 objects celebrating the life and career of Husain, a Qatari artist who was born in India and passed away in 2011.

Located in Qatar Foundation’s Education City campus, the Lawh Wa Qalam: M F Husain Museum is made up of a series of rectangular and cylindrical volumes with geometric relief patterns on the facades.

Khosla‘s design for the building was based on a sketch Husain drew when imagining what a museum dedicated to his works might look like.

“The architectural challenge, one I enjoyed immensely, was to translate his symbolic vision into a contemporary building that could both house his individual legacy and engage with the context of Education City,” said Khosla.

“The museum’s architectural language evolved into a series of spaces that invite reflection and exchange, with materials that celebrate our shared cultural histories across South and West Asia.”

The museum’s interior was designed as a series of exhibition spaces that guide visitors through Husain’s career, containing the artist’s paintings, sculpture, films, tapestries, photography, poetry and installations.

Elsewhere in the building is a cafe, gift shop, timber-lined library, creativity hub and an auditorium designed for events and lectures.

“Created as a space for learning, discovery, and cross-cultural dialogue, Lawh Wa Qalam: M F Husain Museum invites visitors to explore Husain’s artistic world and the influences, philosophies, and memories that shaped his practice,” said the Qatar Foundation.

Other art museums that have recently been featured on Dezeen include a gallery in Suzhou with a ribbon-like roof designed by BIG and a curving museum in Los Angeles designed by MAD, which is nearing completion.
