Periculum Security Group Introduces Crisis Training Model Designed to Address the Limits of Table-Top Exercises

  • by

Periculum Security Group has introduced a crisis training model designed to support organisations facing increasingly complex and unpredictable disruption, as evidence continues to show that traditional table-top exercises often fail to prepare teams for real-world crisis conditions.

Across industries, table-top exercises remain a common method for testing crisis readiness. While these simulations can clarify roles and procedures, industry data suggests they often fail to translate into effective performance when incidents unfold under genuine time pressure and uncertainty. A 2024 review by the Institute for Crisis Management found that many organisations experienced coordination or decision-making breakdowns during real crises despite having conducted regular table-top training.

Responding to Gaps in Traditional Crisis Preparation

Periculum Security Group stated that the new training model was developed in response to these gaps. Rather than focusing solely on scripted scenarios, the programme prepares individuals and teams to make decisions when events evolve unpredictably and do not align with predefined plans.

The training is delivered by Steve Keogh, Head of Corporate Training at Periculum Security Group and a former Scotland Yard detective with more than 30 years of experience in major crime and terrorism investigations.

“Table-top exercises show how people expect to respond,” said Keogh. “Real crises show how people actually respond when information is incomplete and the pressure is real.”

Incorporating Real-World Decision-Making Under Pressure

Periculum Security Group noted that real crises often involve conflicting information, compressed timelines, and emotional strain. Research published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology indicates that acute stress can impair analytical thinking and narrow attention, increasing the risk of fixation or delayed decisions.

Drawing on experience from criminal investigations and corporate crisis response, the training model exposes participants to controlled but pressured environments that reflect these conditions. The goal is to improve judgement, communication, and coordination when clarity is limited and circumstances are changing.

“In operational settings, clarity rarely comes first,” Keogh said. “You act on fragments, reassess constantly, and work as a team while the situation continues to develop.”

A Team-Based Model for Crisis Response

Periculum Security Group emphasised that crisis response is rarely the responsibility of a single individual. Studies from the Centre for Crisis Studies show that many failures occur between teams, particularly during communication handovers or escalation decisions.

As a result, the training model involves participants at multiple organisational levels, reflecting the distributed nature of crisis management. The company stated that this structure is intended to strengthen coordination and shared understanding across teams during high-pressure situations.

“Crises are managed collectively,” Keogh said. “Outcomes depend on how well teams communicate and adapt, not just on decisions made at the top.”

Meeting Growing Demand for Practical Crisis Readiness

Periculum Security Group provides intelligence-led advisory, investigations, security, and crisis training services to organisations operating in complex risk environments across the UK, Europe, and the United States. The company said the training model reflects increasing demand for preparation that addresses behavioural and cognitive factors alongside formal procedures.
