Battuello Artistry Announces Custom Bridal Commissioning in the Client’s Choice of Precious Metals, Tied to Its Vanilla Orchid Line

  • by

Napa Valley artisan jeweler Mark Battuello is expanding custom bridal commissions through Battuello Artistry, offering wedding bands and engagement sets made by hand or cast in a client’s chosen precious metals. The work ties to Vanilla Orchid, the designer line that grew from these commissions.

— Battuello Artistry, the studio of self-taught artisan jeweler Mark Battuello, is offering custom bridal commissioning for couples who want a wedding band or engagement set made to order in their own choice of precious metals, from silver and Argentium Silver to solid gold and platinum set with natural diamonds. Commissioning gives couples a direct route to a one-of-a-kind ring rather than a finished piece chosen from a display case.

The offering covers both routes a couple might take. A client can commission an artisan piece that Battuello designs and builds by hand, or bring an existing design to be cast in the metals and stones they select. In both cases, the choice of metal is the client’s, and that choice determines where the finished ring lands in price. The same design can be produced in silver for a more accessible piece, or in solid gold with natural diamonds at the higher end, without altering the work’s character.

Battuello is a fourth-generation member of a Napa Valley grape-farming family and is self-taught at his craft. Under Battuello Artistry, he makes custom inlay rings and personalized pieces, each built for the client who commissioned it. Prices for the handcrafted work start at $150 for a stainless-steel band, while a solid platinum band with a stone or lab-grown opal inlay can cost up to $6,500. His pieces have been carried on consignment in independent boutique shops across Napa Valley and Sonoma County since 2020.

“My entire line can be made in Solid Gold with high-quality natural diamonds if the recipient wants it that way,” said Mark Battuello, founder of Battuello Artistry.

The Client’s Choice of Metal Sets the Terms

In a Battuello bridal commission, the metal decision does much of the work. Argentium Silver .960 appears close to white gold in color and resists tarnishing, a durability the studio describes as lasting a wearer’s lifetime. Solid gold with natural diamonds moves the same design to a higher tier, and platinum is available as a casting option for couples who want it. The studio’s first solid white-gold inlay ring, made for clients Gideon and Suzanna Richardson, who have given permission to be named, combined Bello Opal with real gold flakes, an example of how a bridal commission can be built around materials chosen for one couple.

Rings can carry personalized engravings inside the band, visible only to the wearer, with names, wedding dates, and other markings set in a typeface the client chooses. For an engagement set, the band and ring are designed to sit together as a pair rather than as two pieces bought separately. One recent engagement set combined a couple’s two favorite flowers, an orchid and a hydrangea, cast in solid Argentium Silver, a higher-grade silver still unfamiliar to many buyers, with an opal inlay that can be set in diamonds instead. The engraving is treated as part of the piece rather than an addition, which is why the client is asked to choose the wording and type early in the process rather than at the end.

How the Vanilla Orchid Line Grew From Single Commissions

The bridal commissioning connects to Vanilla Orchid, the designer line Battuello built to carry selected designs to retailers through manufacturing partners while keeping the artisan character of the original work. The line is the path by which a piece first made for one couple can become a design produced on a wider scale.

The name is personal before it is commercial. The orchid is a flower Battuello associates with his mother, who receives orchids each year for both Mother’s Day and her birthday, which fall in the same month. He eventually had to stop buying them after her kitchen, and then the dining room ran out of room. The vanilla half reaches back to a family tradition of making vanilla ice cream when relatives visited. That same quality, a piece that means something specific to the person who owns it, is what the commissioning work is built to carry, whether the ring stays a single commission or becomes part of the line.

Why Couples Commission Rather Than Buy Finished

Most retail jewelry exists first and finds a buyer second. A custom Battuello commission works the other way around: starting with what the couple wants the ring to hold, then building the piece to carry it. The choice of precious metal is the client’s, and the finished ring exists once, for one couple. For buyers deciding between a finished ring and a commissioned one, that combination of personal design and lasting metal is the difference Battuello Artistry is putting forward for the current wedding and engagement season.
