PICO today officially unveiled its first all-in-one Mixed Reality (MR) headset, the PICO 4 Ultra. This launch marks a significant milestone for PICO in the MR technology sector, delivering a richer and more personalized mixed reality experience to users.
High Performance Hardware
The PICO 4 Ultra is equipped with dual 32-megapixel RGB cameras and an iToF depth-sensing camera, providing an exceptional stereoscopic high-definition color passthrough experience. Additionally, the device introduces a panoramic workspace concept, supporting multi-window operations that enhance multitasking efficiency and comfort.
Introducing Full-Body Motion Tracking
PICO also unveiled its motion capture accessory, the PICO Motion Tracker. Users can strap this lightweight and comfortable tracker to their ankles to achieve full-body motion capture. Paired with PICO’s proprietary multimodal fusion tracking solution, it delivers highly accurate, low-latency motion capture, compatible with popular entertainment applications such as VRChat, Tempo Club, and Les Mills Dance.
“The PICO 4 Ultra is not just an innovative VR device; it’s a testament to our commitment to bringing users deeper into both virtual and mixed reality experiences,” said Allen An, Regional Director of PICO APAC. “With its advanced technology, including multifocal lenses, seamless integration of MR capabilities, and the introduction of our new motion tracker, this launch marks a significant leap in how users interact with and perceive digital environments. We believe it will deliver an unprecedented level of immersion and redefine the boundaries of virtual experiences, paving the way for the next generation of VR and MR.”
Comprehensive Flagship Configuration, Building an All-New MR Experience
PICO 4 Ultra supports multi-window operation on its panoramic workspace, enabling users to freely adjust the size and layout of application windows in a boundless virtual space, achieving smooth multitasking operations. Users can also switch between immersive and passthrough modes with a single click in the system navigation bar. Moreover, PICO 4 Ultra offers users a world-leading MR/VR application ecosystem, allowing them to enjoy an unparalleled audio-visual entertainment experience.
These features are made possible by the powerful MR capabilities of PICO 4 Ultra, which is equipped with seven visual sensors. Around the body of the device, four environmental tracking cameras are used for SLAM spatial positioning, while two colour cameras and one iToF depth-sensing camera are utilized for environmental perception.
After processing, raw images can be displayed on the screen at 8 megapixels and 20.6 PPD, delivering high-definition images. Additionally, PICO 4 Ultra optimizes edge distortion and overlay issues, resulting in a high-definition and low-distortion colour passthrough image. The iToF depth-sensing camera precisely measures distances up to about 3 meters at a wide angle of 60 degrees, which is crucial for PICO 4 Ultra’s ability to accurately perceive spatial distances.
Together with PICO’s proprietary environment perception algorithm, PICO 4 Ultra can reconstruct a virtual environment that closely matches the real-world environment. This combination forms the powerful MR perception capability of PICO 4 Ultra.
PICO 4 Ultra also features a high-quality dual 4K+ super-sense display, supporting a refresh rate of up to 90Hz by default that has been colour-calibrated. The rendering resolution has been increased to 1,920*1,920, approximately 62% higher than PICO 4, making it very close to the physical resolution of the screen for clearer and more immersive visuals.
The PICO 4 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform, supported by 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, ensuring smooth MR experiences. The device continues PICO’s classic balanced design, with the front main unit weighing around 304 grams and the rear head cushion weighing about 276 grams, making the total weight only 580 grams for comfortable wear. PICO also introduced a new ring-less controller that is more lightweight and easier to grip, while still retaining the broad-band linear motor for users to enjoy delicate haptic feedback.
Full-Chain Spatial Video Optimization, Revolutionizing PICO Video Experience
In the digital entertainment era, spatial video is becoming a new choice for users to record their lives. PICO 4 Ultra combines excellent hardware and software to enhance video experience, supporting a full-chain spatial video experience from shooting to playing.
The PICO 4 Ultra’s bionic human eye lens layout with a specific distance between them allows it to simulate human binocular vision when shooting spatial videos, presenting 3D images with spatial depth to viewers. It can shoot spatial videos at a maximum resolution of 2,048*1,536 at 60 fps, and for dynamic subjects, the action recording is smoother. Future updates will support spatial audio recording, which can more realistically reproduce the exciting moments behind spatial videos.
PICO 4 Ultra also breaks down barriers between devices, fully supporting spatial videos and photos shot by Apple devices, including those captured by the iPhone 15 Pro series and Vision Pro. Users can directly watch these content by importing them into PICO 4 Ultra photo gallery, further enriching their viewing options.
Continuous Expansion of Application Ecosystem, Enriching MR Audio-Visual Entertainment Experiences
PICO 4 Ultra brings a world-leading MR/VR application ecosystem to users. Currently, PICO has over 600 applications, including almost 500 games, covering a variety of scenarios such as audio-visual entertainment and productivity. This also includes 48 MR games and 21 games that are compatible with the PICO Motion Tracker.
PICO 4 Ultra provides an excellent gaming ecosystem, covering a full range of experiences from casual puzzle games to hardcore strategy games.
PICO Connect has also been upgraded, reducing streaming latency by up to 30% when paired with Wi-Fi 7 routers. It supports seamless cross-screen interconnectivity between PCs/Macs and smartphones, allowing users to switch easily between devices, share screens, and remotely control them, transforming PICO 4 Ultra into a powerful multi-functional entertainment and work platform.
PICO Motion Tracker Released, Crafting Full-Body Immersive Experience in MR World
At the launch event, the updated motion capture accessory, PICO Motion Tracker, was also unveiled. Users need only strap the tracker to their ankles to achieve full-body motion capture. Weighing only 27 grams (tracker+base), it can be used continuously for around 25 hours. With ergonomic soft padding, a comfortable wearing experience is ensured even during intense activities like sports or dancing,
PICO Motion Tracker can automatically pair with a PICO headset upon startup, and ensure subsequent automatic reconnection every time it is turned on. PICO offers the industry’s simplest calibration method: one-glance calibration. Users need only stand and look down at the device to successfully calibrate, allowing for quick operation.
Apart from being comfortable and easy to use, the tracker itself excels in tracking capability. PICO Motion Tracker uses an IMU and IR light fusion tracking scheme, with optical assistance for more precise and stable tracking, combined with a private transmission protocol for lower latency and stronger interference resistance. Together with PICO’s proprietary multimodal fusion tracking solution, the tracking accuracy is high, synchronizing various actions performed in the real world fully with the virtual world.
PICO Motion Tracker features a rich application ecosystem, supporting popular entertainment applications like VRChat and Tempo Club, and unlocking a broader Steam game ecosystem via PC streaming. PICO Motion Tracker is not only compatible with PICO 4 Ultra but also with previously launched models such as PICO 4 Pro and PICO 4, enabling current users to enjoy a brand-new full-body immersive MR experience.
