Qatar is set to create a permanent pavilion in the Giardini della Biennale in Venice, Italy, which will be the first new national pavilion in the gardens for 30 years.
Set to be built alongside the James Stirling-designed Book Pavilion at the centre site, the pavilion will become the 30th permanent national pavilion in the parkland.

The architect for the pavilion, which will join structures designed by Alvar Aalto, Carlo Scarpa and Sverre Fehn, has not been announced.
Qatar’s pavilion will be the first national pavilion added to the park since the South Korean pavilion by Seok Chul Kim and Franco Mancuso opened in 1995.
In 2015 Australia’s pavilion was rebuilt, with Denton Corker Marshall creating a “mysterious black box”.
“La Biennale di Venezia is the world’s pre-eminent gathering in art and architecture, and the Giardini is the historic landscape where extraordinary pavilions stand as ambassadors for their nations,” said Qatar Museums chairperson Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
“Qatar is proud to take its place in this international assembly, advancing our role as a global leader in cultural diplomacy and providing an unparalleled platform for giving voice to the creative talent of our nation and the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia region.”
No date has been announced for the opening of the pavilion. However, ahead of its construction Pakistani architect Yasmeen Lari will create an installation called Community Centre at the year’s architecture biennale.
Set to be curated by Italian architect Carlo Ratti, this year’s event opens on 10 May with the theme Intelligens Natural Artificial Collective.
“The title Intelligens is linked to the modern term ‘intelligence’, but it also evokes a wider set of associated meanings,” said Ratti at the theme announcement. “In fact, the final syllable, ‘gens’ is Latin for ‘people’.”
“A new, fictional root emerges, suggesting a future of intelligence that is inclusive, multiple, and imaginative beyond today’s limiting focus on AI,” he continued.
