In this day and age, finding a company that champions timeless craftsmanship and embodies the traditional values of furniture-making can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Wellsbuilt is that rare gem – a Rhode Island-based woodworking studio where lasting design is brought to life through meticulous attention to detail. Founded by artisan Nolan Wells, the studio specializes in crafting solid hardwood furniture that seamlessly balances form and function. Whether it’s a sleek stool inspired by mid-century aesthetics or custom built cabinetry tailored to your space, Wellsbuilt’s pieces are a testament to the enduring art of true craftsmanship.
Wells’ journey began at a young age when his stepfather, a carpenter, handed down a few woodworking machines to create a rudimentary workshop in the basement of his apartment. “It was really exciting to have my own space dedicated to learning the craft,” Wells reflects. Over time he honed his skills, drawing inspiration from Shaker, mid-century, and Scandinavian design traditions. His work embodies clean and simple designs with thoughtful details to spark interest. “Finding the balance between traditional design components with embellishments that make it feel fresh and unique is always the goal,” he says.
Wells’ first piece, the Morales Coffee Table, was born from a client’s request for a toddler-friendly design without sharp corners or edges. Its modern sensibility and the subtly rounded profiles quickly made it a personal favorite. This design language carried over to subsequent creations, such as the McGuire Stool, featuring gentle curves, splayed legs, and a softened seat, and the Makarious Shelving Unit, distinguished by its rounded corners and clean, cohesive structure.
Looking ahead through the remainder of 2025, Wells is focused on “continuing the juggling act of running and growing a small business” – a journey we’ll eagerly follow, cheering from the sidelines.
