Düsseldorf artist Volker Hermes mixes up historical portraits by hiding their faces. Volker admitted to using Photoshop to disguise people’s uniqueness by reshaping existing parts in the paintings.
The Hidden Portraits series by Hermes critiques riches, fame, and social standing. As the artist noted, “Only the elite commissioned portraits. They were very expensive and full of codes and allusions in apparel or high-ranking traits that we no longer comprehend because our society is changing. We don’t grasp the remainder of the picture, therefore we largely gaze at the portrayed ones’ faces. I cover the person, so one must view the painting differently. I combine the past and present with parallels to modern culture.”
