DiscoRectangle Turns Abstract Geometry Into Color-Drenched Rugs

  • by

There are certain design moments that call for restraint and simplicity, leaning into minimalist or even brutalist sensibilities. And then there are those that embrace a joyful “more-is-more” philosophy, where color and form do the heavy lifting. DiscoRectangle, the new hand-tufted rug collection by interior designer Sam Buckley in collaboration with Italian rug makers cc-tapis, confidently lands in the latter camp, channeling abstract geometry and the vibrant energy of dance floors into a series of bold, immersive pieces that are bound to brighten hearts, minds, and floors.

Built around the discorectangle – also known as a stadium or pill shape – the collection translates Buckley’s recognizable interior language into four rugs and a runner that feel at once architectural and fluid. Large, graphic shapes stack and overlap across the surface, their precise lines offset by an energetic play of color. Each piece is handcrafted in Himalayan wool, lending a richness and durability that matches the visual impact.

Color is where DiscoRectangle truly comes alive. Bright pops of yellow, pink, mint, and blue collide with deeper, moodier shades of green, brown, and burgundy, creating compositions that feel vibrant yet grounded. Buckley draws on a wide range of references – from dance music and collectible design to historic craft and European heraldic hues – resulting in a palette that is both playful and steeped in visual tradition. The effect is surreal and statement-making, designed to inject warmth, movement, and personality into any space.

The series is offered in several distinct designs, each exploring Buckley’s graphic language in a different way. DiscoRectangle Maxi makes the biggest statement, pairing sweeping forms with a high-impact mix of mint, blue, and pink, punctuated by hits of yellow and deep burgundy. DiscoRectangle Mini distills that same visual rhythm into a more compact scale. Disco Ball shifts to a circular format, using curved lines and luminous color to create a lighter, more whimsical focal point, while the Disco Runner elongates the motif into a streamlined piece well suited to transitional spaces like corridors and entries. cc-tapis renders the brilliance of Buckley’s colors in vivid detail, colors even, deep and crisp.

For Buckley – an architectural technologist, curator, interior designer, and DJ educated in Edinburgh and Milan – DiscoRectangle is part of an ongoing exploration of geometry and color that extends beyond rugs into furniture and other interior objects. With cc-tapis’s exploratory craftsmanship and Buckley’s multidisciplinary vision, the collection strikes a balance between maximalist energy and thoughtful design, proving that a little more color on the floor can go a long way in shaping how a space feels.

More color in our interiors does indeed equal more color in our lives, and it is our duty to respect that process and live large. If there was one thing you could do to be more colorful today, DiscoRectangle or otherwise, what would it be?
