Dezeen features editor Nat Barker has been named Architectural Journalist of the Year at the prestigious International Building Press Awards 2025.

The award, which was given to Barker at a ceremony in central London last week, was presented for his “depth and craft in storytelling”.

“Nat won this category because of his excellent and varied work, which showed depth and craft in storytelling throughout,” said the judges.

Barker’s win marks the second year in a row that Dezeen has taken home the International Building Press’ (IBP) Architectural Journalist of the Year award, with editor Tom Ravenscroft winning the accolade last year.

Barker was praised for the quality of his writing over the past year, which included a feature on the broken design and architecture industry, an opinion piece reflecting on the role of the lead architect in the Grenfell Tower tragedy and a feature exploring how Norman Foster became the most successful architect in history.

“His survey of the broken employment industry was a thorough piece of research that had taken several months and resulted in record levels of engagement,” said the judges.

“The comment piece on Grenfell could only have been written by somebody with great knowledge of the tragedy and was the most moving piece that the judges read in this category,” they continued.

“His appreciation of Norman Foster aligned with reader interest in his legacy and impact, and although the piece is largely positive, it was seen as a balanced telling of his career.”

The wins follow success for Dezeen’s editorial team earlier this year, when design and environment editor Jennifer Hahn was named Young Arts Journalist of the Year at the Chartered Institute of Journalists’ inaugural Young Journalist Awards.

This year also saw Dezeen Awards receive two accolades at the Awards Awards 2025, including being named event of the year.
