If you’re reading the Internet, you’re likely seeing Sofia Pro in action (as of 2024, the typeface delivers information on an incredible seven billion-plus web pages, according to Adobe Fonts). The typeface is a visual benchmark for many, communicating for major brands like TikTok, Pepsi, and Unilever. You’ve seen it grace the screen in ads during Super Bowl XLVIII, on Times Square billboards, and as the identity for the 85th Academy Awards. Most people know Sofia Pro even if they can’t name it.
There’s a good reason for its ubiquity: designers love Sofia Pro for its open aperture, legibility, and versatility across the diverse media landscape.
Last month, French foundry Mostardesign, founded by Olivier Gourvat, released an expansion of Sofia Pro. Gourvat originally released Sofia Pro in 2009 as an heir to Paul Renner’s Futura, but it has since gone beyond its original brief. For the newest evolution, Gourvat introduced 64 new fonts across four families: Normal, Narrow, Condensed, and Compact. The range of widths and the variable font format enable designers to refine and optimize type for projects ranging from complex editorial layouts to responsive digital formats. Sofia Pro 2025 also has expanded language support, befitting a typeface with its global presence, including Cyrillic, Greek, and Vietnamese.
“I am deeply moved to see how Sofia Pro has been integrated into such diverse contexts,” says Gourvat on his website.
This update is more than just an evolution; it’s a key milestone for this type family, which becomes more versatile and redefines how designers approach typography.

Most remarkably, Sofia Pro is leaning into its global values with purpose. The new version of Sofia Pro (Regular and Light styles) will be made available for free to organizations actively working to combat climate change. Gourvat recognizes that designers like himself no longer want to design without discernment or impact. By making Sofia Pro available for free to organizations with an environmental cause, Gourvat hopes to make this vital messaging more visually appealing (and reduce the costs of doing so).
