Harwoods Volvo introduces the new, all-electric EX60 that celebrates 70 years of pioneering seatbelt technology with the innovative multi-adaptive seatbelt.
— The Volvo EX60 is a landmark car for this famous manufacturer as it celebrates seven decades of seatbelt innovation, introducing a world-first multi-adaptive seatbelt that offers new levels of protection and comfort for passengers and drivers.
As a company that’s always been renowned for safety, Volvo was the first global manufacturer to fit three-point belts as standard 70 years ago. This design was revolutionary and is still used in cars to this day. Even more remarkably, Nils Bohlin (the head engineer at the time) agreed to share the patent for free with all car makers, improving driver and passenger safety for everyone.
Fast forward 70 years in the future, and you reach the current day, which signifies another landmark moment in Vovlo’s seatbelt innovation technology. The new, all-electric EX60 will be the first car to feature the company’s patented multi-adaptive safety belt, which utilises some of Volvo’s most advanced technology to date.
The Multi-Adaptive Seatbelt
What makes the multi-adaptive seatbelt unique is that it uses various sensors both inside and outside the car to help adapt and tailor the seatbelt’s response to the individual passenger. It’s a state-of-the-art system that can calculate the occupant’s height, weight and seating position – alongside the nature of a specific collision.
In doing so, these sensors trigger a response that suits the occupant and focuses on the main risks to that individual. For instance, if the belt detects a larger passenger in a high-impact collision, it generates a much higher belt load to help mitigate whiplash and head injuries. On the other hand, smaller passengers in low-impact collisions will receive a reduced belt load to protect against rib fractures.
As well as utilising countless sensors, the new multi-adaptive seatbelt is the product of years of collision data analysis to help determine the ideal belt load based on the impact and the individual.
A Century Of Volvo Innovation
The 70th anniversary of Volvo’s first three-point seatbelt doesn’t just mark the introduction of this new innovation; it also coincides with the brand’s UK centenary in 2027. Melillo Shaw, Managing Director of Volvo Car UK, says:
“Volvo has always been at the forefront of safety evolution and innovation, and we’re pleased that we can continue to make new developments on such vital features like the seatbelt. The latest multi-adaptive seatbelt in the new EX60 is a testament to our pioneering technology and approach to safety that is continued today.”
