Custom Health Plans Launches Free Cost Review for Texas Employers as Group Health Premiums Climb

Plano-based brokerage offers multi-carrier benchmarking to small businesses entering the 2026 renewal season.

— Custom Health Plans, an independent Texas health insurance brokerage with 30 years of market experience, today announced a free Small Business Cost Review for Texas employers entering the 2026 renewal season. The program provides multi-carrier rate benchmarking at no charge to businesses with 1 to 50 employees.

The launch responds to sustained pressure for renewal among small employers. According to the most recent Kaiser Family Foundation Employer Health Benefits Survey, the average employer-sponsored family premium has reached approximately $23,000 per year, with single coverage above $8,400. For a 10-person Texas firm, group health insurance now represents more than $100,000 in annual operating costs.

“The single largest factor in a renewal outcome is whether anyone shopped the market,” said Richard J. Monello, President and CEO of Custom Health Plans. “Most small employers in Texas are quoting one carrier per year, not five. That difference shows up directly in the renewal letter.”

The Cost Review benchmarks an employer’s existing plan against quotes from five carriers (Cigna, Humana, United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Aetna) and screens for federal cost-reduction options, including the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit, ICHRA, QSEHRA, and level-funded plans. Reviews are conducted at no cost and carry no obligation to switch carriers.

Custom Health Plans cited three observations from its Texas client work that informed the program:

Small employers rarely receive more than one carrier quote per renewal cycle, despite five major carriers operating in Texas.
Eligibility for the federal Small Business Health Care Tax Credit, which provides up to 50 percent of premium contributions for qualifying firms with 25 or fewer full-time equivalents, is often missed.
Level-funded plans, available to groups as small as 5 employees, remain underused in the Texas small-business market.

Texas employers can request a Cost Review through the Custom Health Plans website. Additional information on small business group health insurance plans is available online or by phone.
