Home Tour | East End Residence by Williams Burton Leopardi

Tucked into the inner fabric of Adelaide CBD, East End Residence sees the coming together of the classical and the timeless through a layered approach. Williams Burton Leopardi re-sculpt the existing interior to direct light and create moments of intimacy and retreat.

As an exercise in personal expression, the reconfiguration of this three-story townhouse home ensures an imprint of its current owners is an additional chapter to its existing narrative. From the entry and lowest level, movement is funnelled upward into the main living area on the first floor, where walls have been removed, and the ceiling levelled to increase the sense of flow and emphasise calmness.

Positioned in the newly aligned staircase, views toward the integrated bench that runs the length of the living room and dining setting welcome engagement.

The long and monolithic kitchen island plays an interactive role in the living, dining and preparing spaces, clad in handmade ceramic tiles.

Home to an ex-ballerina and current Pilates instructor and her family, a delicate elegance is expressed throughout, balanced by an underlying foundation of strength. Contrasting materials come together to enhance movement and align with a more contemporary occupation of the spaces.

The immersive softness of the palette is bound by an underlying blush tone that takes form in different ways and iterations across the home’s multiple levels. As the base for the vertical and horizontal surfaces, its warmth inspires the use of brass as the nuanced and detailed accents within joinery and the kitchen. The reflective nature of the refined metal combines with other surfaces to enhance the internal scale and bring external light inward.

Using the verticality to their advantage, Williams Burton Leopardi create differing levels of compression and release within the home, with the main middle level as the living space and the sleeping and more recessive-type areas on the level above. As its own stage of sorts, the kitchen becomes a dramatic and central gathering point, jutting out into the living space and sitting sculpturally. The varying textures and natural elements reinforce the idea of the home as a protective and cocooning space.
