The leaders in GPS technology pledges to collect 100kg of ghost nets to safeguard Malaysia’s oceans

Garmin Malaysia is proud to announce its partnership with Reef Check Malaysia, an organisation committed to healthy oceans by managing marine ecosystems in Malaysia sustainably, in a sustainable initiative aimed at combating marine pollution through the collection of ghost nets. This collaborative effort highlights both organisations’ commitment to environmental conservation and the preservation of marine ecosystems.

Under this initiative, Garmin Malaysia pledges to contribute RM100 for every 1 kilogram of ghost nets removed from Malaysian waters. Garmin Malaysia has set a target to collect RM10,000 through this initiative from March to September 2024.

“At Garmin, we have always been at the forefront of sustainable efforts and ocean conservation. Our dedication to marine conservation also aligns closely with one of the main key industries Garmin caters to – the Marine market. Our excitement about collaborating with Reef Check Malaysia stems from our shared commitment to making a tangible impact on marine ecosystems in Malaysia. Through initiatives like the ghost net collection and the introduction of our eco-friendly wearables like the Garmin Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition watch, we aim to leverage our expertise and resources to contribute to cleaner oceans and a healthier planet for future generations”, Sheena Sim, Marketing Lead, Garmin Malaysia.

Alongside this pledge, Garmin has recently introduced the Garmin Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition wearable, an innovative dive-focused wearable created from recycled ocean-bound plastic, embodying our dedication to sustainability. It allows diving enthusiasts to live out their passion for the sport with an advanced diving computer while expressing their love for the ocean through responsible consumption.

Reef Check Malaysia will lead the ghost net removal operations, leveraging its expertise and network of local trained islanders to safely remove abandoned fishing nets from underwater habitats surrounding islands in Johor. These nets, commonly referred to as ghost nets, pose a significant threat to Malaysia’s marine life, entangling marine animals and damaging coral reefs. Hence, Garmin is committed to playing a part in the removal of ocean pollutants to preserve Malaysia’s pristine waters.

“We are grateful for the support of Garmin Malaysia in our mission to protect Malaysia’s marine biodiversity. Through this partnership, we aim to raise awareness about the impacts of marine pollution and inspire action towards a cleaner and healthier ocean”, Julian Hyde, Chief Executive Officer, Reef Check Malaysia.

Expanding on the campaign, the initiative does not end with the ghost net collection. Garmin is dedicated to utilising these collections for upcycling artisanal products that could benefit users, such as multipurpose pouches that are waterproof and more. This commitment exemplifies Garmin’s holistics approach to sustainability, demonstrating a dedication to repurposing ocean waste for practical and meaningful purposes.

The overall campaign and the introduction of the Garmin Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition wearable are part of Garmin Malaysia’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability. By collaborating with organisations like Reef Check Malaysia, Garmin is committed to continue making a positive impact on the environment and communities where it operates.
